National Railway Museum, York. Mallard 75. The Great Gathering 2013.

The Great Gathering ran from July 3rd until July 17th 2013.

Visited here on the last day of this Great Gathering - Wednesday 17th July 2013.

The Great Gathering was a bringing together of the 6 remaining class A4 locomotives in The Great Hall at the National Railway Museum in York to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Mallard's world record breaking run.

Mallard 75. Celebrating Britain's steam record.

75 years ago, on 3rd July 1938, the A4 class steam locomotive, Mallard (below), set a new world steam locomotive record of 126 mph. That record still stands.

The National Railway Museum is only 30 minutes drive south of Thirsk and is well worth a visit. One can easily spend a day here, it so vast. A brilliant day out for anyone interested in historical steam locomotives.

The photographs show only a very small part of the National Railway Museum's exhibits. There are thousands of exhibits to see and this is the most comprehensive collection in the world.

The 6 class A4's can be seen again at the Autumn Great Gathering at the N.R.M. from October 26th until November 8th, 2013 and again at Shildon in County Durham from February 15th until February 23rd, 2014.
