Made a visit to Durham Cathedral on a lovely sunny, warm day on the 4th September 2013. There was a flower festival on in the Cathedral and in the Library Building ( a seperate building outside of the cathedral ) the Lindisfarne Gospels were on display. There were lots of visitors about.
Durham Cathedral is said to be the greatest Norman building in England and perhaps the whole of Europe.
It occupies an imposing strategic position next to Durham Castle on a rocky promontory in a bend in the River Wear, high above the medieval city.
The central Tower is 218 feet high and to reach the top one has to negotiate 325 steps. Definitely not for the unfit. Well worth the effort for the magnificent views over the city and surrounding countryside.
Durham Cathedral is in County Durham and approximately 40 miles to the north of Thirsk.
Views over Durham from the top of the Cathedral Tower.
The building below is where the Lindisfarne Gospels were on view to the public.
There will be more information and photographs added in the near future.
